Just spent a week at Casa De Early Birds and loved it. Quiet, great home and yard. Steps from the Caribbean Sea. Close to town and Puerto Viejo. Henrry and family were always there to assist. Jungle, Sea, Great weather, great hosts. Pura Vida.
Casa de Earlybirds was everything we hoped for. It was the perfect place to get away, relax, enjoy the local culture and eat great local foods. Wish that the mosquitoes did not think the same thing. Apparantly we were a delicacy for them (not a slight on the accommodations, just something to expect in the rain forest). Manzanillo has a beautiful coral reef which we snorkelled several times and also several nice local run restaurants. All in all a wonderful getaway.
We spent eight days at Casa de Earlybirds, and we wish it could have been longer. Everything about the home and the property is exactly what we hoped for and wanted out of our trip to Costa Rica. The house has everything we needed and more, including a caretaker and his family who were very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The beach in front of the house is just as pictured, and it\'s an easy walk to surrounding beaches and the village of Manzanillo, or a short drive to Puerto Viejo. We can\'t wait to come back.
From the comfort of the deck, we saw several species of monkeys, bats, lizards and geckos, some crazy leaf bugs and mantises, all kinds of amazing butterflies, crabs, and so many kinds of birds. From this point on, the definition of \'wildlife\' for me is watching a Capuchin monkey swing from one tree to another while a toucan flies right over him. We never saw any sloths on the property, though if we\'d gone for a walk away from the shore a bit more often, I\'m sure we would have. We saw plenty of them in the towns and along the highway. We were there almost a month over Christmas and New Years\', and the beach was probably as busy as it would ever get, but even so, we never saw more than a dozen people in our vicinity at any given time. Most of the time, we had the beach to ourselves. The surf was very rough for half of our stay. Surfers seemed to enjoy. We played around with a body board, but otherwise the water wasn\'t very swim friendly. On calmer days, however, we were able to go out past the breakers. On rough days, there were places to swim at the ends of the beach where the water is calmer. As for the house itself, it was remarkably cool even on hot days. We were able to dry our clothes and towels, even when they weren\'t in the sun. The hot water is very hot, and the cool water is nice and cool. We had very few insects on the deck, except at twilight. We rarely had any insects in the rooms. The house has netting carefully covering all of the windows and roof vents. The nets on the bed keep out the odd stray pretty effectively. There were friendly bats that surprised us a couple of times in the kitchen. The kitchen is sufficient and the fridge kept everything cold. Ice froze fast. We had a few ants interested in the water from time to time, but nothing serious. Never saw any roaches. A few interesting (and enormous) beetles, but friendly things. The beds are comfortable. The bedding is nice and the pillows are good. The grounds are beautifully kept. Sand and gravel (no mud). Henry and Rosi took great care of us while we were there. Rosi did a thorough cleaning every few days. Henry made sure that we were happy and that everything was working. He brought us new water a few times. While they were attentive and helpful, they were never annoying. They respected our privacy while we were there. Dan and Rose are excellent hosts. Communication was top notch and they were good enough to help us find dates that fit both our schedules.
