I was born in Idaho, raised in Maryland went to college in Utah, and my husband and I moved to Maine in 1981. I am currently a full-time teacher, a mother of 3 grown sons, and a grandmother to 6 children. We currently live on Little Deer Isle, about 5 minutes from the rental house.
My husband built this house around 2000. We had lived near fresh water in other parts of the state, and though we are now on the ocean, we wanted a place to go swimming and fishing in fresh water. My husband is an artist at heart, and he designed and built the house with attention to every detail. He and his crew cleared the land, put in the driveway, and built the house. He personally did most of the stonework around the fireplace. The granite countertops, custom built cabinets, etc., are a source of great pride to him. Everyone that enters is pleased at the aesthetic nature of the building.
Walker Pond was first owned in the early days of the settlers. When the pond froze to 2' or more in the winter, the owners would saw the ice out of the pond, skid it up over the hill and into a cove in the ocean called The Punch Bowl. Ships from Argentina would come into The Punch Bowl and load ice blocks and saw dust into the hold to take to South America for refrigeration.
Brooksville is part of the Blue Hill Peninsula. There are many artists, artisans, farmer's markets, back to earth people including Helen and Scott Nearing, whose farm still exists, even though they have gone on.
Castine was a French port prior to the French and Indian Wars, and is now home to Maine Maritime Academy.
You can reach me via email - shthoner@gmail.com or by phone - 207-632-5313. I do teach full time, and am doing summer schooling the rest of this week, but am also part of two committees to try to figure out how to both keep kids and families safe while pursuing some kind of normalcy, so you may need to leave a message.
Your own
There is a set of stairs that is open from the walk-in basement to the main floor. This is not safe for children who are mobile until they are about 5 years old. There is a picture of this in the photo album. Also any adult that has difficulty navigating stairs should reconsider. The walk to the pond is at about a 20 degree slope and has loose pebbles - so anyone who might have difficulty navigating that should not try to go to the shore. In the winter, if it snows or there is ice, you may have to park in a pull-out on the main road and hike in. You may also lose power, so will not have access to water or a flushing toilet. There is a wood furnace to heat the house, water from the lake to draw and use, and flashlights for light at night.
No smoking is allowed in the house. If I smell smoke, you don't get your deposit back.
My husband and I moved to Maine over 40 years ago. We live here year round. Maine is great to visit in all seasons, however, you need to know your own limit of adventure. Winter is great, but we have an ice storm or snow storm and you have parked below, you may not get out for awhile. Come prepared to survive.

You can survive here on what you can at home, or you can splurge and go out to eat every night. If you are happy just enjoying hikes, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and nature in the raw, it won't cost you any more than what you spend at home.
The house was so accommodating and helpful. We loved the house and had a great visit to that lovely part of Maine.
My family spent 5 nights at this Walker Pond home and are so grateful for the experience. Sharon was a terrific host – she answered questions we had before we arrived and gave us a good sense of the house so that we knew what to expect. The location of the house was perfect for us- we spent two days just playing on the pond and 2 days up in Acadia taking in the sites. Walker Pond is absolutely gorgeous – clean, warm, and perfect for a swim or a paddle around the lake. The house is as comfortable as it is beautiful. The kitchen is well equipped and we were able to enjoy nice meals overlooking the lake. Foosball was a popular past time but we also just enjoyed reading and spending time as a family. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect vacation.
We (my husband, and two sons - 7 years and 7 months) stayed at this camp in July for two weeks during a five week road trip. And we all agree that the two weeks on Walker Pond were the most relaxing and wonderful part of the vacation. The house is on the pond and hidden enough in the woods that you cannot see other cabins from the living area or the deck. We spent most of our days fishing, canoeing and kayaking around the pond. There is a kids\' camp on the Pond. Motor boats were pulling campers learning to ski on the weekdays, as well as kids learning to sail and swim. It was more activity than we anticipated, but was fun to see them. We also enjoyed exploring the nearby towns of Blue Hill, Stonington and Deer Isle, which were no more than 15-20 minutes drive. We even made it to a local production of Annie at the Blue Hill town hall! Acadia park is an easy hour\'s drive and Camden is a little over an hour. The house itself has everything you need for a quiet vacation. The kitchen had all the amenities for us to cook in most nights. The loft upstairs was perfect for our older son to spread out legos and play. And the downstairs fuseball table was used nightly. The house does not have internet, cable and our cell phones did not have service. We considered this one of the best parts of the house. Because of this we played board games, read Harry Potter and were reminded that we can have great fun without technology. Lastly, I cannot say enough good things about Sharon. From the time that we booked the house, she was prompt with responses to my questions. We were a bit concerned about our baby and the stairs (which turned out to not be an issue), but she offered several solutions. When we arrived she made sure we had everything we needed. And halfway through our stay she picked up sheets and towels, laundered them and returned them. If you are looking to truly have some time alone or with family/friends without any distractions, this is the perfect house for you to rent. If we find ourselves back in Maine, we will definitely be contacting Sharon again.
