Lifestyle
Lifestyle sets St Maarten/St Martin apart from other Caribbean islands. Groceries stores on the island are abundant ranging from roadside stands to modern facilities similar to the USA. The more than four hundred restaurants, the vibrant nightlife and the fabulous, frequently clothing optional beaches provides an array of experiences. More importantly, the island is home to a truly multicultural community, with a wonderful level of tolerance and respect among its members. Eighty different nationalities living peacefully together on 37 square miles - making this the most cosmopolitan little island on earth. It is a destination with attractions to suit almost everyone's taste. Many of the island's natives live a comfortable middle or upper class life, however as with any other Caribbean Island there are areas of poverty and issues with immigrants.
English is the most widely spoken language. Other predominate languages include Dutch, Spanish, Creole, Papiamento and of course French all which contribute to the rich culture and vibrant spirit of the island. Some knowledge of the French language would be helpful on the French St. Martin side of the island, however most all are very helpful to assist tourist.
The dollar and the Dutch Guilder are the most widely used currency on the Dutch side of the island with the Euro being the predominate currency on the French side. Check the exchange rate before you travel to the French side. Many Casinos and Banks will exchange your money or usually your credit card or dollar is widely accepted.
Transportation
Many airlines fly into Sint Maarten, Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), including but not all, American Airlines, Jet Blue, Delta, Spirit, Air France, WestJet, Sunwing, and KLM. From the USA if you live on the east coast it is a short hop and often a direct flight, for our Canadian friends there is again a few direct flights but often a stop in Miami occurs. From the west coast it always means at least one stop in the major hub city like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, NYC, Philadelphia, or Atlanta. Direct flights on KLM and Air France can be found depending on your location.
