Locals are very friendly and polite and typically, fun loving with great ties to family and friends. You will notice a feeling of being welcome and safe amongst the local people. This is true of most of the Yucatan, as its roots are founded in Mayan culture.
For day trips there are many options: Exotic ruins and locales, swim in Cenotes (under ground cave lakes). Explore small towns and Puertos. Pink flamingo nesting, trips to historic Merida and many more, offering an almost limitless variety of activities for vacationers. 1.5 hour flights to Merida International Airport (MID) from Texas , Florida or Mexico City. Los Angeles (LAX)via Mexico City to Merida, (about 6 hours). From Cozumel and Cancun, hourly 24/7 bus services to Merida, about 4 hours travel, about US$25. Highways are good. Local taxis and cheap buses service Progreso and Chicxulub. Car rentals and taxis available at Merida airport.
Public transport is cheap and often. Very good bus and coach system across Mexico.
