The Ogliastran sea is guaranteed to amaze. The long beaches in the south and the small creeks in the north are the pearls of the Mediterranean. The rocks that emerge from the clear blue appear to be suspended between sea and sky, offering a safe harbour for gulls and seabirds. Centuries of isolation have protected it from building developments and overcrowding. This is a natural environment that has remained mostly intact through the minimal interference of mankind, having managed to extract great pleasure from its secrets without harming it. Far removed from the hectic life of the city, in Ogliastra the pleasure of admiring and being awestruck by the stunning views, intense colours, and intoxicating scents is there to be rediscovered. This is where patches of total tranquillity can be found, interrupted only by the sounds of nature; unique harmonies composed by the whistle of the wind on the branches, the sea against the shore. Nature reigns supreme, often manifesting itself in breathtaking scenery. Among the bastions of tacchi and tonneri, at the heart of the woodland emerges the mysterious presence of Perda Liana, a splendid rocky tower and paradise for mouflons.

Ogliastra is a beautiful natural theatre that opens from the mountains of \"Supramonte\", on the border with Barbargia, towards the central-eastern Sardinian coast. The name comes for \"Olivastro\", the local wild olive three. Ogliastra is know and admired for its magnificent coastal area, all surrounded by mountains and cliffs, and for some of the most untouched coast of Italy. Its natural Mountain-Sea park includes famous spots and landmarks like the \"Cale\" (beach-harbours); among the most famous ones Cala Gonone, Cala Sisine, Cala Goloritze, Cala Luna... Another impressive natural landmark is the massive \"Pedra Longa\", a natual cliff literarly planted into the sea. Ogliastra is becoming a popular area for lovers of nature, wild landscapes and fabulous local food, it is the area of the island most loved by conscious tourists that like to escape from the crowded areas of the north and the south of the island. The two major towns of the area are Lanusei and Tortoli. Together, they are the administrative capitals of the recently born \"Province of Ogliastra\". Lanusei is a very ancient mountain town overlooking the valley of Ogliastra. Tortoli is a coastal settlement that reached the status of economical centre of Ogliastra, thanks to the proximity of Arbatax port, the main gate to the area from the sea. Population in Ogliastra is very little, around 45000 people only, with some of the lowest densities in Italy. Dozens of minuscule villages spot the region of Ogliastra, each one with its tradition and its proud heritage.
Embedded between the Tyrrhenian sea and the mountains of Gennargentu in the heart of eastern Sardinia, the area of Ogliastra boasts a wild and savage landscape, that prides its inhabitants and makes curious its visitors, who are increasingly choosing to spend their holidays in Ogliastra. Until recently annexed to the Province of Nuoro, Ogliastra became province in 2005, playing two records simultaneously among the Italian provinces: the less populous and the most long-lived, with the highest number of centenarians in the nation. A region waiting to be discovered. Full of historical evidences like nuraghi, domus de Janas, sacred sources, tombs of the giants and menhirs, Ogliastra offers unique sceneries of limpid waters and rugged mountains, expecting from the tourist a new attention, with particular interest in details, and able to recognise and respect the intimacy and the reserve of this region.
Getting to Ogliastra: There is a small airport in Arbatax which has a few flights operating, if you are lucky and get a flight here then it would be the easiest way to get to Ogliastra. Another way to get here would be by the sea through the port of Arbatax since it is enjoyable and beautiful. There are buses operating in Ogliastra, however, they might take a little longer since the province is a little further than the rest of the places in Sardinia. The best way to reach Ogliastra would be by road since the highways are extremely scenic. Highways from Cagliari, Oblia, Alghero and Nuoro all connect to Ogliastra, and the routes are some of the most scenic in Italy making it a very enjoyable experience.
Paragliding and free climbing are two of the extreme sports, the most diffused in Sardinia. The higher summits of Sardinia, are particularly adapted to these disciplines but Sardinian precipices demand great physical-athletic preparation and much courage, and also precaution and experience. For the lovers of the sporty rock climbing, Barbagie and Ogliastra constitute really interesting destinations. The climbing (sporty and free) is practiced also in Gallura, Marghine-Planargia, Montiferru, Nuorese, Sarrabus and Sulcis-Iglesiente.
Sardinia is one of five locations identified in a recent article on the healthiest places on earth to live. Sardinia, an island of 1.3 million people off Italy’s Mediterranean coast, is a Blue Zone. Blue Zones are areas in the world that have been determined by scientists as places where the people live the longest. Sardinia has some of the oldest people on earth, and Sardinian food may be the reason for their health and longevity. The Mediterranean Diet is no doubt good for you, and Sardinians actually live the Mediterranean lifestyle, too. This could be the key to their incredible health and longevity. Sardinian wine, cheese, and bread have something extra going for them. Sardinians produce a number of wines, but a local variety called Cannonau, a dark red wine, contains the world’s highest levels of antioxidants. Experts have also found that, while the Sardinian diet isn’t heavy on fish, which is the usual dietary source of essential Omega-3 fatty acids, Sardinians get heaps of this dietary boon from a local cheese called pecorino sardo, made from the milk of grass-feed sheep. Sardinians also commonly eat simply, homemade breads that contain vitamins and lactic acids that fight harmful bacterial in the digestive tract. Experts suspect that these three pillars of the Sardinian dietâ€Â¦dark red wine, fresh country cheese, and homemade breadâ€Â¦combined with other lifestyle and dietary factors, could be the keys to living a longer, healthier life no matter where you live. “For 30 years we’ve been providing information on places where people can live better for less,” says Jackie Flynn, publisher of InternationalLiving.com. “There are places on earth where people live simple, healthy lives without the financial and social worries that weigh so heavily on people in modern, industrialized countries. We asked our editors and contributors around the world to come up with their top five, and Sardinia made the cut, as did New Zealand, Panama, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
